560 Elephants….
The National Pharmacy Association (NPA) is urging patients to only order the medication they need. The NPA said the NHS in England disposed of an estimated 3,400 tonnes of medicine last year, the same weight as 560 female African Forest elephants or enough wasted medicines to fill 75 swimming pools a year! This wastage costs the NHS at least £480m a year.
Olivier Picard, chair of the NPA, said: "As soon as a medicine leaves a pharmacy, even if it is not used and is unopened, it must be disposed of so it is important patients only get [the medication] they are sure they will use."
Some patients are ordering more medication just in case it is needed later, rather than because it is necessary at the time, the NPA said.
It added that patients on complex medication regimes are more likely to return unused medicines or unopened boxes.
The Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire and Berkshire West Integrated Care Board (BOB ICB) previously said it was spending about £10m a year on medicines that go unused.
"If a patient has any concerns about their medicines, they should speak to their pharmacist who can help them get the most out of their medicines," Picard said.
Autumn Vaccination Schedule
The planned schedule for vaccinations is as follows:
- from 7th September: Nasal flu vaccinations for eligible children
- from 12th October: Flu vaccinations for pregnant women
- October: Flu and COVID vaccinations for all other eligible patients as per the national programme
If you’re eligible, the practice will contact you and ask you to book an appointment. We urge you to make a booking as soon as you hear from the practice in order to guarantee you the best mutually available appointment.
It is important that your contact details, including your mobile number, is up to date.
Witney Minor Injury Unit (MIU)
Following extensive remodelling, the Witney MIU is getting some great reviews from patients.
Feedback on iWantGreatCare (used by the operators - Oxford Health NHS Foundation Trust) describe staff as kind, polite, knowledgeable and attentive, with thorough assessments, clear explanations and a caring approach. Many patients say the care was excellent from arrival to departure and would recommend the service.
While occasional comments note waiting times or facilities such as parking, the overwhelming message is one of professional, compassionate care close to home. The unit (open 10am–10.30pm daily) treats recent minor injuries including sprains, suspected fractures, wounds, minor burns and eye injuries, and has X-ray facilities. Calling NHS 111 for advice or an appointment is recommended, though walk-ins are accepted.
This local service helps keep pressure off A&E while delivering consistently strong patient experiences.

Saving Lives Through Knowledge: Windrush Patients Learn CPR
On a bright July morning, 16 Windrush patients took part in an informative and practical session on heart attacks, cardiac arrest and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
Trainer Dick guided the group through clear explanations and hands-on demonstrations, showing how a little knowledge and confidence can make a real difference in an emergency. The session was made especially powerful when Dr Thomas himself gave a first hand account of how he was the unfortunate recipient of medical intervention when having a cardiac arrest. And he survived!
We are very grateful to Dick for giving up his time to deliver such a valuable training session. Looking ahead, we are exploring the possibility of running a dedicated CPR course focused on babies and young children, potentially in the spring.
