Gliflozin Medication Request

If you are interested in starting a Gliflozin/Flozin medication, please read the information, complete all sections and submit the form. You will then be contacted with medication issued to your usual pharmacy if it is suitable for you.

There is increasing evidence of the benefits of gliflozin medications which include – reducing blood sugar, weight, blood pressure and vascular risk. They protect kidneys and against heart attacks, strokes and heart failure which can be reduced by around 20%.

The main side effects are passing more urine (as peeing out more sugar). This can sometimes lead to an increased risk of urine infection and genital infection (reduced by rinsing after passing urine and keeping well hydrated is advised).

Although Gliflozin medication alone (like Metformin) will not cause your blood sugar to go too low (hypoglycaemia), if you are on other medication such as gliclazide or insulin, then a Gliflozin could make hypoglycaemia more likely.

If unwell on a gliflozin medication then you should stop it (in line with ‘sick day rules’). You should have your blood ketone level tested urgently as part of the medical assessment (as there is a very low risk of 1 in 10,000 of ketosis even when the blood sugar level is not elevated).
